Hiatus complete

After spending over 3 months pondering the blog that was feeling uncomfortable and forced, I have finally decided to focus on what I am doing and not involve the loved ones and my personal health problems. Just seems weird to me. So, to wrap up the previous albeit few posts – fibromyalgia is under new management via nutrition and exercise, Fletcher with Asperger’s is going to be homeschooled next year, Baby Henry is great — as babies are —, and my teenager Gillian is steadily remaining one of my favorite people.

Now… on to slightly-less-meaningful but lasting things, none the less.

Baby needs a whiskey

In the south, the moment the topic of babies’ teething comes up, someone always mentions either whiskey or a “sugar tit”. Although I am a transplanted southern girl, I am opting for another solution for my 6-month old. Teething gel seemed like a waste of money with my older two kids, so I am now trying teething tablets. Can I say, instant relief? Baby Henry is passed out right now literally 2 minutes after popping two of those bad boys on his mouth. Looks like the whiskey is saved for another day.

I am using Hyland’s Homeopathic Teething Tablets. I looked up the ingredients to find the source of the magic.

Calcarea Phosphorica, a.k.a. Calcium phosphate. Helps mineralization of teeth.

Chamomilla. The catnip of childhood.

Coffea Cruda. Yep, it’s coffee. Not your cup of morning joe, though. “Like cures like” in homeopathy so this is a little stimulant for over stimulation. It is also good for adults with insomnia due to over active mental activity. Did someone say, “Mom?”

Belladonna. Okay, this one has a checkered past. “Bella Donna” means “pretty lady.” During medieval times, Italian women put drops made from this plant in their eyes to dilate them and enhance their appearance. The plant itself is highly poisonous. Homeopathically, it soothes restlessness and sudden pain.

In addition, Dr. Jack Maypole has a great article about teething in general here.

Hint of Saffron saves Sunday

I have been gluten-free for a week now and have already noticed a decline in my fibro symptoms. However, I dreaded Sunday approaching. Our family has a pancake tradition every Sunday, and I was going to miss out. Have no fear, Sanjay is here to save the day.  His Gluten-free Millet and Oat Pancakes are scrumptious and will be on my plate from here on out.

I don’t know my hing from my heeng.

Now that I have my bearings a bit, and I’ve done some research, I’ve learned more about the beast that is fibromyalgia. It is a thing, or maybe it isn’t a thing unto itself. It seems that the condition of having fibromyalgia causes symptoms, but other conditions cause fibromyalgia. After reading most of a great book, Fatigued to Fantastic by Jacob Teitelbaum, I’ve learned there are several life choices to keep in check such as sleep, hormones, yeast, and nutrition, among others.

So, to start with the fact that I could have an imbalance of yeast and an intolerance to gluten, I’ve been reading, reading, reading. Turns out, a gazillion things have gluten in them (including said “hing” and “heeng”). Well worth the effort, I am sure, but sheesh.

A beast.

Henry has started showing the signs that he is ready for solid foods. Momtastic’s Wholesome Baby Food website has a nice, simple plan for introducing solids.

Who knew you don’t HAVE to start with cereals? Avocado and banana are good first foods!

Asperger’s Rule #2

2. Get a good book.

If you are like me, I must inform myself as much as possible about a potentially challenging issue, or else my mind will take me down a road to the worst possible scenario. I’m just a half-empty kind of a girl. Here are a few that we’ve found so far that have been super helpful, especially at remaining positive:

The Complete Guide to Asperger’s Syndrome by Tony Attwood
Can I Tell You About Asperger’s Syndrome?: A Guide for Friends and Family by Jude Welton
